Fighting Illegal use of Images

Thu Jul 22, 2004, 2:01 PM
The support that watermarks has seen is an evidence that people care about the safety of their works, that people worry about their works being stolen.

This is a good sign, in that it may create a positive wave where people start to use watermarks and other type of protections on their digital shared images.

Please get one thing straight - there is no such thing as something 'not good enough' for people to steal. Everything can be used incorrectly. It's up to you to prevent that to happen to your own work.

Fortunately, it is possible to see fantastic art works here in deviantART, that are protected with watermarks, and in a way that does not reduces the quality of the said piece. This is what we should all strive for.

If you know of any other method of watermarking, or digitally protect one's images, please, share it with the group; it could become one of our next tutorials.

Again - Thank you to each and everyone of you that added our tutorials to their favorites, that added this account to their devWatch, that has promoted this resources account on their journal or signature, or that has started to use watermarks on their photos. Especially for this last one; Thank you!.

That is why this account exists.

Mission Statement

The idea behind watermarks is to raise awareness as to the problem of image theft.

Never as now has it been so easy to inappropriately use an image without having the proper permission to do so. One can see, everyday, somebody complaining about seeing their work stolen and posted on another website, page, blog, journal, and, in some cases, even been used with commercial purposes.

Image theft is a problem of the digital revolution, and this account was opened to try and help stopping this unwanted phenomena, and that by:

º Explaining how to add an - effective - watermark to one's digital files, (photos, scaned paintings, etc);

º Answer questions about the rights an artist has over his/her artwork;

º Explain to newcomers to the artistic scene why is image theft forbidden, and why they shouldn't do it;

º Remember DA members of their responsability towards the deviantART policies and Etiquette;

º Create an open group of discussion about pleaseant yet effective watermarks, and create a space for suggestions, ideas, inniciatives, etc.

Feel free to support watermarks ~watermarks by giving your contribute to this account in the ways you think more appropriate, but, above all, by:

adding a watermark to your shared digital files!!

Most often, people who use the images of others do so unaware of the copyright protection towards the images that they are using; adding a watermark will prevent them from doing so, and, even in cases of actual image theft, will make the use of the image far more difficult, and, hopefully, not worthwhile.

Do what you can do to stop image theft - add a watermark!
